Total Grant Funding: $4,647,377 since 1997

For nearly thirty years, Maddie’s Fund® has collaborated with the San Francisco SPCA (SF SPCA), providing over $4.6M in funding, ranging from small Special Giving grants to supporting their conferences, events and capital campaigns as well as partnering with the SF SPCA for the Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days and Maddie’s Treatable Assistance Program. We have recently invested in two of their access to care programs, Community Medicine Education Program (CoMET Program) and Community Ambassadors Program.

CoMET Program

In August 2022, Maddie’s Fund awarded SF SPCA a $300,000 grant to support the CoMET program over three years. In partnership with Young Community Developers, this project is designed to reduce barriers to entry for the animal well-being field while also engaging communities historically underrepresented in the veterinary field. Program participants develop skills by participating in lectures, workshops and assisting in the SF SPCA’s various clinics while receiving a living wage and fringe benefits. At the end of the three-month program, they develop a project and present to the SF SPCA, with the chance to apply for full-time positions. As of July 2024, eleven individuals have graduated from the CoMET Program, and three are currently employed at the SF SPCA. Two more program cycles will be held by July 2025.

SF SPCA Community Ambassadors Program

In May 2024, a $3,176,301 grant was approved to support the Community Ambassadors Program over three years in San Francisco and Stockton, CA. The Community Ambassador Program will expand access to veterinary care in these areas by building deep community relationships, strengthening veterinary health systems and ensuring that care is available for those who need it most. The grant will underwrite the costs of two Community Ambassadors per city per year and the costs of direct care, including vaccines, parasite treatment and spay/neuter surgeries with the goal of helping 9,300 animals over three years. The SF SPCA has partnered with Stockton Animal Shelter since 2012, and together they have taken Stockton’s live release rate from 25% to 80%.
