Help needed caring for displaced pets

January 19, 2025

San Diego Humane Society’s fire-certified Emergency Response Team is on the ground in Los Angeles County, assisting pets and people affected by the Eaton Fire. They deployed on Jan. 9 and were in place at least until Jan. 14, possibly longer if needed. San Diego Humane Society also transported 39 dogs and one kitten from Pasadena Humane Society on Jan. 8-9. Each of these animals was already available for adoption at Pasadena Humane and bringing them to San Diego created urgently needed space for animals injured or displaced by the fires. On Jan. 13, SDHS held a Foster Sendoff, deploying Pasadena Humane Society rescued dogs to new homes to make room for more pets impacted by the Los Angeles fires. The SDHS is asking for more foster volunteers to help with the already impacted shelters in San Diego County. Not every foster volunteer who signs up will get a dog from Pasadena Humane, but every foster will make an incredible impact by opening shelter space so San Diego Humane Society can continue to take in animals from Los Angeles. After completing training, volunteers are prompted to visit the Foster Portal to view animals who are available for foster, as well as submit their interest in either a specific animal or animal type. The Foster team will be in touch within 3-5 days of receiving the application, to provide the prospective foster with information about the animal and to book a pickup appointment. San Diego Humane Society provides all the supplies. To sign up to become a foster, visit sdhumane.org/foster.
